Actor Shia LaBeouf Car accident

July 30, 2008

Washington - It turns out that American actor Shia LaBeouf was not responsible for the car crash that landed him and his friends in hospital on July 27 morning.

According to authorities, the driver of the pickup that LaBeouf had hit caused the accident, as he had run a red light. The actor had been making a legal left turn when he ploughed into the oncoming car.

"It appears he was not at fault," E!online quoted Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore as saying July 29. "The other car ran a red light and, if not already, they will be cited. They will now be listed as Party One on the report, indicating they were at fault," he added.

The other driver was actually cited at the scene for the moving offence that resulted in the rollover of the Indiana Jones star's ride. But even though the 22-year-old Transformers star is not at fault and he has to spend the next month recovering from extensive hand surgery, he still has a DUI charge to take care of, as his blood-alcohol level at that time was wrong.

LaBeouf was booked on suspicion of DUI at Cedars-Sinai Hospital as according to sheriff's Sgt. Kristin Aloma he 'was exhibiting obvious signs of intoxication'.

"He was showing obvious signs of intoxication from the smell of alcohol coming from his breath," Sgt. Scott Wolf told People.

LaBeouf was cited with a misdemeanour DUI and no changes will be made to that, Whitmore had stated.

Naval Academy from Georgia senior killed in car crash

July 29, 2008

A 21-year-old Naval Academy senior from Georgia was killed early Monday when his car crashed in a wooded area in Virginia, authorities said yesterday.

Midshipman 1st Class Aaron H. Reaves was heading north on U.S. 301 shortly after 3:30 p.m. when he lost control of his 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt and crashed into a tree near Fort A.P. Hill, an Army installation southeast of Fredericksburg, a Virginia State Police spokesman said. Midshipman Reaves, of Kennesaw, Ga., was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fatigue might have contributed to the crash, said the spokesman, Sgt. Thomas Cunningham. There was no sign of alcohol use or excessive speed, and Midshipman Reaves was wearing a seat belt, Sergeant Cunningham said. Police are investigating.

Joel Reaves said his son was driving to Annapolis after spending the weekend with family in South Carolina and Georgia. He left his parents' Atlanta-area home Sunday evening and had been on the road for about 10 hours when the crash occurred, Mr. Reaves said.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday in Georgia. Mr. Reaves said the family has requested that Midshipman Reaves be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

July 29, 2008

CORTLANDT, N.Y. - A 5-year-old boy has died after his mother apparently took her eyes off the road to check on him and hit a wall in Westchester County.

Crash scene investigators presume that Jacob Murtha may have become ill while in the back seat and his mother turned around to check on him. The boy was strapped in a child safety seat.

Police say Nancy Murtha was traveling on a curving part of the road in Cortlandt when her car hit a wall on Tuesday morning.

The boy was pronounced dead at the Westchester Medical Center. His mother was also taken to the center with chest pain.

Portland Maine Driver Avoids Jail In Fatal Car Crash

July 28, 2008

PORTLAND, MAINE - A 20-year-old Scarborough man will not face any jail time for a car crash that took place last summer taking the life of his foster sister.

A district court judge in Portland imposed a $1,000 fine and a seven-month license suspension on John Heger.

Heger was behind wheel of a car that veered off Black Point Road in Scarborough on July 12, 2007, killing Brittany Burke.

After the original charge of manslaughter was dropped, Heger pleaded guilty to criminal speeding and driving to endanger. The prosecution sought a six-month jail term, but Superior Court Justice William Brodrick opted for leniency after Burke's mother said Heger will suffer enough from the memory of the fatal accident.
